eWaste in Africa
About 50 tons of electronic waste, mostly from computers, printers, and cellphones is generated worldwide annually. Referred to as eWaste, much of it ends up in Africa as so-called "donations," where informal sector recyclers extract precious metals and dump the rest. Unregulated eWaste dumping creates extreme environmental and health hazards, exposing populations to deadly toxins such as lead, mercury and cadmium. But in Cape Town, South Africa, a recent pilot project, sponsored by HP and the Swiss firm EMPA is proving there can be a viable alternative.
This short video follows Susanne Dittka from EWASA,Western Cape, as she takes us on a fascinating journey from repair, to refurbishment and even e-waste jewelry!
